Fullbar

Fullbar is a diet supplement created by Dr. Snyder, a general surgeon who has performed more than 1500 bariatric surgeries according to the Fullbar website.  The bars consist of basic food ingredients and do not include any effective appetite suppressants or fat burners.

Fullbar products contain wheat, soy, and an assortment of other food ingredients based on the flavor.  They are not recommended for those with peanut allergies since they are manufactured in a plant that processes peanuts and peanut products.  Some of the bars are dairy-free for those on special dietary restrictions.

A new supplement containing black pepper, caffeine and a concentrated form of capsaicin (the chemical that makes red peppers hot) is said to burn as many calories as a 20 minute walk.

A study by Joel T Cramer, assistant professor of exercise physiology at the University of Oklahoma showed energy expeditures of 3 to 6 percents after taking the supplement. Enough to validate the products weight loss claims. The study measured oxygen intaxe and CO2 production in the participants to determine their arresting metabolic rate.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Jillian Michaels regarding her diet supplement.

According to papers filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, that the  “Jillian Michaels Maximum Strength Calorie Control” supplement falsely claims that it will “restrict your caloric intake automatically.” The complaint quotes her website claiming that the supplement is “like an automatic diet” and “Two capsules before main meals and you lose weight. That’s it.”

Considering her attitude on weight loss on the Biggest Loser show, lending her name to a supplement product, especially one making these claims, seems like poor taste.

Herbal Magic

Herbal magic is in the news again regarding the high price of the program, and the pressure to purchase their supplements.

My wife signed up with them many months ago, at the discounted rate of around $400 for the starter package. After that, she found that she had to purchase their supplements monthly at a price of around $250/month. The two supplements consisted of WM-200 at $220/month and Chromagic at $25/month.

Experts in the U.S. who carried out the latest study into the berries’ health benefits, believe they may change the way the way we processes fat and sugar in our diet. Acai Berry

According to the marketing, Acai berry can:

  • increase energy levels
  • improve sexual performance
  • improve digestion
  • help you sleep
  • detoxify the body
  • contains high levels of fiber
  • improved skin appearance
  • helps heart, diabetes and other chronic illnesses
  • reduces cholesterol

There are even claims that it will help with a penis size and makes men more viril and sexually attractive to women! The problem with these claims is that there have been no controlled studies to back these claims up, nor has it been evaluated by the FDA. There have been reports of bad marketing schemes that let you sign up for a free trial, only to have your credit card billed before you have evaluated the product at all.

Now for some real facts about the Acai berry. It does contain about ten times more antioxidants than grapes and double that of blueberries, and if you can get it locally, it could be a good fruit to add to your diet, but don’t expect miracles.

Fat Blockers

One example of a fat blocker is Chitosan, which is derived from exoskeleton of curstaceans (shrimp, crabs, etc), which claims to be able to block 6 to 10 times its weight in fat. However, unmodified chitosan would only remove around 10 calories of fat per day from your diet. Modified Chitosan may live up to this claim, but there are concerns that it would also remove important nutrients and minerals from the food that you eat.

Chitosan is also used as a growth enhancer in gardens, and perhaps that is where it should stay.

Usage
The average dosage taken by consumers of wheatgrass is 3.5 grams (powder or tablets). Some also have a fresh-squeezed 30 ml shot once daily or for more therapeutic benefits a higher dose up to 2–4 oz taken 1-3 times per day on an empty stomach and before meals. For detoxification, some users may increase their intake to 3–4 times per day. It should be noted that consumers with a poor diet may experience nausea on high dosages of wheatgrass.

Hydroxycut

According to published studies, some ingredients in the Hydroxycut formula may help obese patients lose up to 4.5 times the weight than they would with just diet and exercise alone. This is supported by two 8-week studies in which all groups followed a diet and exercise plan, subjects using ingredients similar to those in Hydroxycut lost, on average, significantly more weight than subjects who were using a placebo (14.99 vs. 3.06 lbs and 12.54 vs. 3.53 lbs).
